I have tooth sensitivity, what can I do

Jaw pain due to bruxism

Tooth sensitivity is a common dental problem where one experiences discomfort or pain when eating or drinking hot, cold, sweet or sour foods. This is due to the exposure of the inner layers of the tooth (dentin and pulp) which contain nerve endings. Some common causes of tooth sensitivity are gum recession, worn fillings, cracked teeth, tooth whitening and plaque build-up.

If you have Tooth sensitivity, there are various ways in which it can be treated or alleviated:

Desensitizing toothpastes: These toothpastes contain active ingredients that block the sensation of pain from reaching the nerve endings in the tooth. It is recommended to use desensitizing toothpaste for at least four weeks to see significant improvement.

Fluoride treatment: Fluoride helps to strengthen the enamel of the tooth and provides a protective layer to the sensitive parts of the tooth. Fluoride treatment can be applied in the form of gels, varnishes or mouthwashes.

Dental bonding: Dental bonding is a procedure in which a resin material is applied to the sensitive parts of the tooth to cover exposed dentin and reduce sensitivity.

Root canal treatment: In severe cases of tooth sensitivity, a root canal treatment may be recommended. During this procedure, the dentist removes the infected or inflamed pulp from the inside of the tooth and seals it to prevent further damage.

Avoid harsh toothbrushing: Brushing your teeth too hard can also cause sensitivity. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush and avoiding excessive brushing can help to prevent this problem.

Tooth sensitivity can be treated with various methods and early intervention can prevent the problem from becoming more severe. If you experience tooth sensitivity, it is important to seek dental advice to determine the cause and the appropriate treatment.
