Dental health and treatment is important. Any patient can go to any dentist whether or not they have dental insurance.

There is no insurance plan that will cover all dental expenses. Most insurance companies pay a percentage of the charge.

It is always the patient’s responsibility to pay any deductible amount, co-insurance, or any other balance not paid by their insurance company.

For patients without insurance we offer our Smile Protection Plan which offers 20% discount on our dental fees and also includes free cleanings and exams.

Below you will find answers to insurance questions. If you still have questions please call our office and we will gladly assist you.

As with all things, some dental insurace plans are better than others. They can limit choice, payment and treatment options. Any patient can go to any dentist regardless of which insurance they have, the only question is whether the insurance will contribute more or less towards their treatment

Below are the 4 main types:

  1. Dental PPO – Preferred Provider Organization plans – These balance between lower costs and dentist choice. PPO dentists contracted in the network agree to accept lower fees for patients with the PPO. Patients pay a certain percentage of the reduced rate (called coinsurance) and the plan pays the rest. With this plan patients can choose their own dentist but will pay more if the dentist is not in network. PPO dentists must collect the patient deductible as part of the agreement.
  2. Fee-for-service / Indemnity / Traditional Insurance – These offer the widest choice to patients to choose their own dentist. The main difference is that a fee-for-service dentist are not reimbursed as much as a PPO dentist. In most cases the patient pays a bit more, but can choose practically any dentist.
  3. Dental Health Maintenance Organization (DHMO) / Pre-paid plans – These plans usually have minimum fees, choice and dentistry. In these plans, contracted dentists agree to small monthly captiation payments for each patient regardless of whether any service was provided. So the less dentistry performed, the better it is for the dentist. Patients can see any dentist, but the benefits can only be used at contracted providers. If you visit a dentist outside of the network, you may be responsible for the entire bill.
  4. Discount / Reduced Fee-For-Service plans – These are not insurance but instead offer access to Dental Procedures at a discounted rate from participating dentists for a monthly or annual charge. You must visit a participating dentist to receive the discount. Patients have little choice in dentistry and patient’s are responsible for a greater portion of the treatment cost than with a PPO or DHMO plan

Any patient can go to any dentist regardless of which insurance they have, the only question is whether the insurance will contribute more or less towards their treatment

Insurance companies always try to control the amount of dentistry a patient can receive, and in many cases will require authorization for certain procedures in advance. At My Fairfax Dental, we will do everything possible to help maximize the insurance benefits to which you are entitled. We always try to provide you with the full fees in advance so that you know the exact cost of the treatment.

The patient is always responsible for all fees for their treatment and need to understand that in the event the dental insurance company refuses to contribute for treatment they are still responsible for all fees.

Pre-Estimations are often time consuming and unnecessary, so in the event the approval is received.

It is very important for the patient to complete the treatment quickly as the approvals will often expire after a short period.

A patient can pay for their dental treatment and then claim it back from the insurance company.

The truth is the dental insurance is really an agreement between the Patient and the Insurance company only.

When we file a claim, we do so only as a courtesy to the patient knowing that if an issues arise, only the patient can resolve it with their own insurance company

My Fairfax Dental, can assist as much as needed to help the patient obtain their maximum insurance benefit.
