Understanding Oral Cancer: Awareness and Prevention During National Cancer Control Month

Fairfax, VA Oral Cancer Screen by Dr. Hang Le

April is National Cancer Control Month, a time to raise awareness about cancer prevention and early detection. While many people are aware of common types of cancer, such as breast or lung cancer, oral cancer is often overlooked. However, oral cancer is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that affects thousands of people each year.

Oral cancer can affect the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, hard and soft palate, sinuses, and throat. The most common risk factors for oral cancer include tobacco use (including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and smokeless tobacco), heavy alcohol use, and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Age is also a factor with most cases occurring in people over the age of 55.

Early detection is crucial for successful treatment of oral cancer. Regular dental check-ups are important for detecting oral cancer in its early stages. Dentists can perform a visual examination of your mouth and may recommend additional tests, such as a biopsy, if they see any signs of cancer. At My Fairfax Dental, we use the FDA-Approved VelScope® system which can help detect oral cancers at an early stage.

In addition to regular dental check-ups, there are several things you can do to reduce your risk of developing oral cancer. Avoiding tobacco products and limiting alcohol consumption can significantly reduce your risk. Eating a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables and protecting your lips from sun exposure can also help lower your risk of developing oral cancer.

During National Cancer Control Month, take the time to educate yourself about oral cancer and its risk factors. By understanding the importance of prevention and early detection, you can take steps to protect yourself and your loved ones from this serious disease.
